Lincoln Douglas- Lesson 5

-The claim of the affirmative is that in no way is war good. Her warrant states that peace is what everyone seeks for and therefore peace has never been proven unethical or immoral. Her impact is seen when she explains that tons of damage has been done by only two having been used in the history of the weapon. Also she elaborates on her point of peace by saying that obtaining nuclear power has not been proven to be effective in gaining world power.
-The affirmative does not attack on the first round, because it is basically stating its case and the facts that it will use throughout the debate. Also because the negative has not stated its case yet, so the affirmative has essentially nothing to attack at this point.
-The claim of the negative is that Just Wars do exist and are necessary in preserving the rights of human beings. The support for the argument is that during the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War II, etc. pulling the trigger to defend your beliefs was not the crime, but not pull the trigger was. The only difference between the wars listed that are Just is that its one man pushing a button, not 500,000 pulling triggers. By keeping the nuclear weapons that the United States is in possession of, we would be preparing ourselves to defend what we believe, and if necessary participate in a Just War.
-The negative attacks the affirmative, and elaborated on its key points during its turn of the first round.
-The affirmative attacks the negative, and also expands on the key points that it made in the first round, during the first rebuttal.
-The affirmative is now really attacking the negative during the second rebuttal becuase it is now getting deeper into the debate and all points are being attacked at this time. Proving your points are really key now for the affirmative.

Lincoln Douglas- Lesson 4

Resolved: A just society ought not to use the death penalty as a form of punishment.
Claim: The death penalty is a just form of punishment for certain offenders.
In a justice systemt that has many repeat offenders, the death penalty is great form of punishment. I believe that it is impossible for some criminals to truly change and that the death penalty is a good ultimate solution, long-term. Jail time is not an adequate punishment for a serial killer, who having killed many people would get to live in the same world/ place as people who are not murderers. The death penalty needs to be enforced by the government because merely serving jail time for unspeakable crimes is not enough.

CNN Student News 1-18-2012

In the CNN Student News today they talked about pumping fuel into Nome, Alaska. The reason that they had to pump it in was because, with it being during one of the harshest winters on record, the Russian tanker that is delivering the fuel was not able to make it to the harbor. I think in order to solve this problem for the future, citzens of Nome should start looking at alternative sources of energy. Also, Russian companies that deliver the fuel need to take into account the weather!

Lincoln Douglas- Lesson 2

Resolution: States ought not possess nuclear weapons.
1. a. States: an individual state that shares sovereignty with the federal government.
    b. possess: have distinct possession of as ownership
    c. nuclear weapons: an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions
2. Absolute, because I believe that this resolution is just.
3. States
4. States, nuclear weapons possibly not being able to be in possession of a state.
5. Affirm- By affirming this resolution, the world would become a safer place. This would limit only the federal government to being able to be in possession of nuclear weapons.
Negate- By negating the resolution, states would then be able to have in their possession, nuclear weapons. This would become a huge health hazard, and affect the unity of the United States as a nation.

Lincoln Douglas- Lesson 1

1. Negative
2. Other political systems besides a democratic, have worked before in the past. We as a country are not obligated to promote a democratic system, because other countries are free to do as they please.
3. Various different political systems have been proven to work in the past. Many different countries are free to do as the please politically and as a country we are not morally obligated to promote a system that has worked for us.
4. Empirical
5. Saying that we are obligated to promote our morals on the other political institutions of the world is wrong, because the majority of one country could say they believe one thing, while another could say that they believe something totally different. Promoting a system that is proven to work is not a bad thought, but doing it off of morals is very wrong.
